About Kat

Artist bio

Kat invites her listeners on a heartfelt journey through the entire emotional spectrum with songs about unrequited love, toxic relationships and the existential search in the wake of life crises.

Kat is known for her magnetic stage presence, honest songwriting and dark-toned vocals. Her personal songs blend delicate melodies with lyrically intricate folk-pop writing, echoing the spirit of artists such as Carole King  and Alanis Morissette.

Her live shows blend humorous storytelling with raw sincerity. She is not afraid to expose her inner fragility or harsh experiences, thus allowing listeners to immerse themselves in the emotional weight of her songs. She’s authentic, dramatic, charismastic, reflective, angry, sarcastic and funny and will typically provoke both tears and laughter from her audience.

The English debut album ,Things We Avoid (2022) — a shimmering gem of honest, sarcastic and poetic folk-pop — earned excellent reviews and found fans across both Danish and international airwaves. She has since release a Danish EP exploring solitude, resilience and emotional self-discovery, and most recently the single Reasons, praised for its “rare emotional maturity” and “refreshing honesty” (Artists In The Spotlight, 2025).

Kat’s ability to turn personal experiences into universally relatable music, solidifies her place as an artist to watch in the contemporary singer-songwriter scene.

Radio Mars. Personal background story

Kat greets the world with a huge smile and infectious energy, but the singer/songwriter has had to overcome some of life’s greatest challenges. Despite her relatively young age, she has already survived cancer and faced the consequences of a destructive relationship with alcohol.

Heartbreak, music and alcohol

Romantic love and music have been the two main driving forces in Kat’s life for as long as she can remember. Although falling in love has always come easily, it has never been a quiet affair. Impossible relationships, unrequited love and falling for the wrong people have — for most of her life — reinforced Kat’s believe that she was not worthy of being loved or treated with respect.

Every time Kat’s heart was broken, she would throw herself into self-destructive periods fuelled by alcohol, with music as her only anchor and means of release. As a result, many of her songs were written in the depressive haze of heartache and hangovers. In 2020, however, she made the decision to say goodbye to alcohol for good. Since then, her creativity and love of music have taken her in new directions.

Mental and physical barriers

Kat’s musical expression has also faced many obstacles – including the Danish “Law of Jante”, a deeply ingrained cultural mindset that had previously been a huge internal barrier to her creative expression. It took a stay in New York in 2012 to break free from it. She vividely remembers one of her new acquaintances saying:
“Oh, drop your Danish modesty; here we embrace talent!”
And suddenly the songs came pouring out.  Kat returned home as a singer/songwriter.

Even so, it would take another decade before her debut album was ready, as Kat encountered several more challenges along the way. Shortly after completing her demo EP, she suffered burnout and was on extended sick leave due to stress. Later, once she had managed to rebuild her life and establish herself as a musician again, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

Kat underwent surgery quickly, but as a result of the operation, she lost most of her voice. She has worked hard ever since to regain it, but has had to accept that her highest notes are gone for good. In return, her deeper vocal tone has added a new, raw dimension to her songs.

Today, Kat Herlo stands stronger than ever, carrying a wealth of experiences and life lessons, a reclaimed voice and a lot to say. Both her heart and body have been through a lot, but have also healed many times – and, fortunately, she still has plenty to give…
